NEW DELHI — At least 21 people were killed and more than 40 others were rescued after a major fire broke out at the Flourish Stay B&B in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, on Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the blaze as guests attempted to escape the smoke-filled building. Visuals from the scene showed some occupants trying to flee through windows as firefighters worked to contain the fire and rescue those trapped inside.
Preliminary reports indicate the hotel was licensed under the Delhi government’s Bed and Breakfast scheme. Authorities are investigating allegations that the property was operating beyond its approved capacity and lacked required fire safety clearances, including a fire No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Officials have not yet released a final determination regarding the cause of the fire or whether violations contributed to the loss of life. Investigators are expected to examine the building’s safety measures, licensing records, and compliance with local regulations.
Reports also indicate that some of the victims were foreign nationals who had traveled to India for medical treatment.
The Delhi government has announced financial assistance for the families of those who died in the tragedy. Meanwhile, authorities continue to gather evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Further details are expected as officials release additional information.
