Traffic disruptions continue on the N3 west of Durban after a devastating multi-vehicle crash near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza claimed the life of a woman and left several others injured on Wednesday morning.
According to the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), emergency crews remain on scene and authorities have not yet determined when both carriageways of the highway will fully reopen. The crash has resulted in significant damage and extensive cleanup efforts, forcing motorists to use alternative routes while investigators and recovery teams work at the site.
Preliminary reports indicate that a truck traveling toward Durban collided with a light delivery vehicle from behind. The impact reportedly caused the truck to lose control, cross into the opposing carriageway, and overturn. In the process, the truck struck a passenger vehicle head-on, killing a woman believed to be in her 30s. A fourth vehicle was also involved in the collision.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and provided assistance to those injured while securing the area for investigation. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims involved.
The crash scattered debris and a large load of corn across the roadway, creating challenging conditions for cleanup crews. The spilled cargo, combined with damaged vehicles and ongoing investigative work, has significantly delayed efforts to reopen the Pietermaritzburg-bound lanes.
RTI spokesperson Sindi Msimang said it remains too early to estimate when traffic will return to normal, noting that recovery operations are still underway and the scene requires careful management before the route can be deemed safe for motorists.
Traffic officials continue to direct vehicles through designated diversion routes and are urging drivers to follow instructions from officers on scene. Motorists traveling through the area are advised to expect lengthy delays and seek alternate routes where possible.
The fatal collision has once again highlighted the dangers associated with heavy vehicle traffic on one of South Africa’s busiest transport corridors. Investigators will continue examining the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the factors that led to the truck losing control.
As cleanup and recovery efforts continue, authorities are asking the public to exercise patience and caution while traveling through the affected area.
